Common to all six options

Practicalities

The things that are true no matter which itinerary wins โ€” flights, paperwork, driving, money.

Travelers & airports

Couple A โ€” Budapest (BUD). Wizz Air, Ryanair, and BA direct to the UK; strong options to LHR, LGW, STN, LTN, EDI, MAN, BRS.

Couple B โ€” Salzburg (SZG). SZG itself has almost no UK summer service; drive ~1h45 to Munich (MUC), which has excellent Lufthansa, easyJet, and Ryanair direct.

Meet in the UK. Both couples land at the same UK airport in overlapping time windows.

Flight prices (indicative, July)

  • BUD โ†” EDI (Ryanair): ~โ‚ฌ140โ€“280 pp RT โ€” verified cheapest
  • BUD โ†” LHR (BA): ~โ‚ฌ350โ€“550 pp RT
  • BUD โ†” LON (Wizz, LGW/LTN): ~โ‚ฌ180โ€“350 pp RT
  • MUC โ†” EDI (LH): ~โ‚ฌ200โ€“450 pp RT
  • MUC โ†” LHR (LH / BA): ~โ‚ฌ300โ€“500 pp RT
  • MUC โ†” MAN (LH): ~โ‚ฌ250โ€“450 pp RT

LCC fares stay flat until ~8 weeks before travel, then spike. Early May is still safe. Book Skyscanner the day dates are firm.

UK ETA (mandatory)

All 4 travelers need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation. Mandatory for Hungarian and Austrian passport holders as of 25 February 2026.

ยฃ16 per person ยท valid 2 years ยท multiple entries ยท approved in under 3 days typically.

Driving

UK cars are right-hand-drive, driving on the left.

Automatic transmission is scarce and expensive โ€” book immediately, not on arrival. Try Enterprise or Arnold Clark over the big airport chains for automatic availability.

EU licenses accepted (no IDP needed). Add both drivers to the rental.

Roundabouts go clockwise. Speed limits in mph. Fill before Skye or the Highlands โ€” fuel is ~20p/litre more on the islands.

Phone & data

EU roaming does not cover the UK post-Brexit.

Cheapest: grab a UK eSIM before travel โ€” Giffgaff, O2, or EE eSIMs run โ‚ฌ10โ€“20 for 15 days and drop on instantly.

Download offline maps for each region โ€” signal is patchy in the Highlands, Snowdonia, and deep Cornwall.

Money

Contactless is used everywhere. Most pubs, cafes, buses, and even small rural spots take tap-to-pay.

Revolut or Wise beats home-country cards on FX fees. Keep ยฃ20โ€“30 cash per couple for rural National Trust car parks and the occasional cash-only pub.

Currency is GBP (not EUR) โ€” worth double-checking if paying by card that the terminal doesn't offer "dynamic currency conversion" (say no; let your card convert).

Passes worth pre-buying

  • Historic Environment Scotland Explorer Pass โ€” Options 1, 4, 6 (Edinburgh Castle, Stirling, Urquhart, Skara Brae, Culloden).
  • English Heritage Overseas Visitor Pass โ€” Options 2, 3, 4 (Stonehenge, Tintagel, Dover Castle, Hadrian's Wall forts).
  • National Trust Touring Pass โ€” any option with country houses and gardens.
  • CADW pass โ€” Option 5 (Conwy, Caernarfon, Harlech, Beaumaris, Chepstow).

Weather & pack list

July highs: London 24ยฐC, Lakes 18ยฐC, Skye 16ยฐC. Expect rain in all six options.

Layers, a proper waterproof (not a fashion jacket), walking shoes with grip. Midge repellent (Smidge or Avon Skin So Soft) for Scotland west coast & Wales.

Plug adapter: UK Type G (three flat pins). Two per couple minimum.

Booking order (any option)

  1. Rental car โ€” automatic, book this week
  2. Flights โ€” lock once region is chosen
  3. Headline restaurants (The Three Chimneys, Rick Stein, Ynyshir, The Witchery, etc.) โ€” 3โ€“6 months lead
  4. Flagship hotels โ€” book within a week of region decision
  5. Day-level accommodation โ€” 2โ€“3 weeks
  6. Attractions with timed entry โ€” 2 weeks before
  7. UK ETA for all 4 travelers โ€” minimum 2 weeks before travel
